One of my favourite things about Christmas is the delicious smells that go with it, cinnamon candles, mulled wine and cakes baking in the oven. YUM.
I was shopping the other day in Zara Home and a sniffed a candle (as you do) and I was left almost dribbling. Gingerbread, mmmm. Yes, so that's when I decided that I just HAD to make some gingerbread.
Obviously gingerbread men were the cutest option with some Christmas snowflakes for the festive season. While they were baking in the oven I then had the idea of making them into decorations that people could pull off the Christmas tree and eat. CUTE and oh so Christmasy!
They ended up one of my best inventions yet, I had a girls eve were me and my best friends had a Christmas dinner and secret Santa and they were the cutest added extra for a midnight feast.
They are SO easy to make and fun, who doesn't love using there fingers to make dough after all.
Here is what you will need:
Ginger bread
350g plain flour |
175g light soft brown sugar |
100g butter |
1 medium egg |
4 tablespoons of golden syrup |
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda |
1½ teaspoon of ground ginger
Icing
200g Icing sugar
4 table spoons water
I used pink dye - Optional
I used a kebab skewer to make the holes, and present ribbon to hang them.
|
Pre-heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4
Put the flour, butter, ground ginger and bicarbonate of soda in a mixing bowl.
Mix it all together with fingertips until crumbly.
Add sugar, syrup and egg and mix until it forms a firm pastry mix.
Using the rolling pin, roll out the pastry to about 5mm thick. Make sure the surface and the rolling pin are well dusted with flour.
Cut out the shapes with a knife and/or pastry cutter
Place the cut out pastry on a greased or non-stick baking tray. Put the baking trays in the pre-heated oven. Remove after 15 minutes (check after 10 minutes).
Make sure you make your hole in the ginger bread while its still warm, and make sure your skewer goes all the way through.
Mix 200g of sieved icing sugar into a bowl and add 4 table spoons of water and mix. Add a colour if you wish. The more you add the more vibrant the colour will be.
Wait until the ginger bread is cool before decorating.
Cut off 6 inch pieces of ribbon and thread through the shapes and tie at the top in a knot.
Now go hang them about the house, anywhere and everywhere you like!
Just remember to eat within 3 days...they taste so good it won't be hard!
With one a week now until Christmas I'm so excited, I'm also excited about a new weekly post I shall be starting this week so keep your eyes peeled!
I'll keep you posted :)
